I have done it in the past and it was a great way for me to stay accountable at getting daily steps in. Journey to Jershon: Scars of the Dark Sorcerer by Joel Heath

A quick and easy read, this book was very engaging and difficult to put down. I loved watching Gabe gain the courage and strength he needed to go on his journey. His story is easy to resonate with as everyone has doubts about themselves throughout their lives. Gabe shows how you can overcome those doubts to be able to do what you need to do.

I would have loved more details and explanations as I was a little confused on some of the story transitions but this book did leave me wanting more. I’m looking forward to the next one!

Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? by Mindy Kaling

I decided to try this as an audiobook as I really love Mindy Kaling. I love the character that she plays in the Office and I was curious to see how Mindy Kaling really was compared to the character that she plays.

I enjoyed listening to this very much. Mindy came across so well in this audiobook. She made me laugh and not want to stop playing the audio. This is the perfect audiobook if you have any kind of long commute as it will leave you wanting more and will make your drive go by so much quicker.

I loved hearing about Mindy’s life prior to the Office. I also had no idea that in addition to acting on the Office, she was also a writer for the show. This makes me want to rewatch the Office to be able to see the episodes from a new perspective.

Her life story took me surprise. While I didn’t really have any preconceived notions about her, I found that I was judging her more on her character in the Office which is definitely not who she is as a person.

I highly highly recommend this audiobook. I also went to get it as an ebook to see what the difference is like.

September 2018 – In Another Time by Caroline Leech

While this was not one of my favorite books, I always enjoy the experience that Once Upon a Book Club provides.

First, the experience.
I absolutely love reading through a book and opening up different gifts as I am reading. It is very true that it brings the experience to life. I think my favorite gift with this book, was the tea strainer. Even though I’m not a tea drinker personally, my roommate loves it!

Now, the book.
The book was well-written but I’ll be honest, I found myself wanting to fall asleep while I read it. I simply could not get into the story line. Maybe part of it was that I typically read at night, but I found myself struggling to read more than a few pages at a time. This is disconcerting to me as normally I am a voracious reader and struggle to put books down!

Maisie simply was not relatable to me. While I emphasized with her journey, I wanted to skip pages so that I would get to more exciting parts. With that being said, I am very happy with the ending.

I love Once Upon a Book Club and it is one of my favorite experiences every month.

August 2018 – Notes From My Captivity by Kathy Parks

Once Upon a Book Club is definitely my favorite subscription box that I have ever subscribed to. I love getting a new book each month and the gifts to open while reading, definitely enhance the experience. I also love that the gifts are of quality and aren’t simply cheap throwaways.

Notes From My Captivity by Kathy Parks was a very engaging read. I was hesitant at first but my attention was quickly captured and I had a hard time putting it down to sleep. I loved seeing Adrienne’s viewpoints and mindset change as she encountered new experiences and she had to learn how to survive. I won’t say too much, but highly recommend reading this book!

I loved the gifts with this book. I wear the necklace frequently and the bowl is a cute little decoration now! I also love the little box that the pictures were kept in.

All in all, definitely a 10/10 star box 🙂

Fairest of All: A Tale of the Wicked Queen

Growing up, what young girl has not read, or at least heard, various fairy tales? We grow up hearing them from one point of view: the villain is bad, the hero/heroine is good. But what made the villain the way they are? Was it sheer evil, or was it a product of circumstances that caused the person to change who they were. Was it conscious or unconscious? What was their purpose/mentality behind what they did? As kids, we don’t think about those things. We take everything at face value because we want to believe in good vs. bad. But life is never that simple. There are always shades of gray. And life causes people to do things that they never thought possible, or even considered that they would do.

For Snow White, all you hear is that the step-mother is evil, tried to kill her step-daughter, and put her into a coma-like sleep from an apple. But why did she do that? What caused her mind to become twisted enough to do this?

This is why I love Serena Valentine’s Villains series. It makes you look at the villains and see their story as well.

The Wicked Queen was jealous of Snow’s beauty….yes. But what made the jealousy so vile and overwhelming. Enter her father and a bewitched mirror. Always striving for your father’s approval, wanting more than anything to hear how beautiful you are, and being told that you would be the fairest if it wasn’t for your step-daughter….day after day after day. While it by no mean excuses what she did, this book allows the reader to see another side of the story

Black Widow: Forever Red

I love Marvel movies. Every one I have seen, I have loved. Now, I have only read a couple of the comics, they just aren’t really my thing. I enjoy them, but I have to be in the right mood and that isn’t often. Plus I tend to read on my phone/iPad which isn’t always conducive to comics. But when I randomly saw Black Widow: Forever Red by Margaret Stohl, I knew that I had to give it a try.

Now, from my understanding, there is not a Black Widow movie as of yet. So needless to say, I don’t know how this book will compare.

I loved this book. I know some of the reviews say that it is simplistic (and it is), but it was also easy to get into and hard to put down. I wanted to read it all in one sitting but unfortunately, I had to go to work (curse you responsibilities!).

I’m not a huge fan of romances in books. At least not right now. It’s pretty rare that I am to be honest. So that’s one reason I love this book. The romance that occurs is cute, young, and innocent. It’s adorable, and the storyline doesn’t fixate around it which is fantastic!

I enjoyed seeing Natasha try to avoid forming commitments and attachments, and at the end, doing so anyways. Watching Ava grow into her own person, and accept both herself and her past, was inspiring. She accepted what her past contains but didn’t let it dictate her present and future. Instead, she became her own person and did what she needed to do to move on.

I am really excited for book 2 and to see how the Black Widow movie turns out!

Divine One

So after book 1, The Summoning, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to continue this series. While it was a good book, it didn’t leave me yearning for more. However, I do not like leaving series unfinished which is the main reason I continued this one.

As in my original review of The Summoning, this series is great for pre-teens/teens/very young adults. It is a quick read and very easy to understand. However, it is lacking for me. I want to know more of the mythology behind everything and I find the plot to be underdeveloped.

The characters and the story line have great potential and for their age group, they are great. It is a light read and is a great series to read to rest and relax after a long day. It does not require a lot of concentration and I greatly enjoyed reading it before bed.

The Summoning

When I was younger, I fell in love with the Daughters of the Moon series by Lynne Ewing. And despite the cliche saying “don’t judge a book by it’s cover”, that was exactly why I picked up the series in the first place. I loved the hardback, black cover but with glittery girls on it. I was immediately drawn to the series merely from the cover.

When I saw this sister series, I knew I had to give it a chance.

I think I would have enjoyed it more when I was younger to be honest. While the characters and story line were great, it felt underdeveloped and simplistic. I would have loved more details during different parts, including the mythology of everything.

This was a great book for pre-teens and younger adults. It is a quick and engaging read that makes you want more. Hopefully the story will develop further!

Lady Knight

I am so sad that this is the last book in the Protector of the Small series! I loved reading about Kel’s journey and I wish there was more.

With that being said, Lady Knight was a great way to end the series. Kel was able to accomplish her dreams and goals without sacrificing herself (physically and metaphorically) in the process. She has great friendships established that are more like family than friends. Kel proves that even though she is young and a woman, this is the right path for her. She proves herself time and time again that she is meant to be a knight and I loved seeing the leadership positions she was put into. Even when it wasn’t something she wanted, she accepted it and devoted herself to it. She put herself after others and by doing that, stayed true to herself and her morals.

This book was very well written and easy to lose yourself in. I highly recommend the entire series! Thanks again, Nicole, for recommending it to me. 🙂
