Mom’s Perfect Boyfriend by Crystal Hemmingway

Please note, I did receive a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. And there are spoilers ahead!

Okay….now to the review. ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!

I’ve definitely read books in Instant message/chat format before… TTYL by Lauren Myracle for example. So when I started this book and it was in text message format, I wasn’t really phased. However, I love that Hemmingway also add it in excerpts from journal entries as well as regular letters also. It was a great way to provide background information around the story without breaking the format of the way it was being written. If you haven’t read a book that is written in conversation form, you really need to give it a try. It’s unique to get used to at first, but I honestly enjoy it more than the standard book format.

For the storyline itself, I thought it was hilarious. After all, who doesn’t feel like they have an overbearing parent at one point or another in their life? I loved the way that this book slightly showed that it can be a learned behavior from the parent before. Margot’s mother was overbearing and could never be pleased, so Margot transferred that onto Lisa and Crystal also. But, I bet if you ask Margot, she would never recognize that she does the same things to her daughters that her mother does to her.

AI and Androids is a huge theme in modern day culture. And let’s face it, realistically we really aren’t that far away from having smart companions/robots/androids or whatever else you want to call them. Artificial intelligence is growing by leaps and bounds almost on a daily basis. And with how obsessed we are with technology already, it’s not that far of a leap to start preparing for having our own robots. Now, falling in love with one and starting a relationship, that may be a little bit more outside the realm of possibility, but then again, you never really know.

I loved the way that Crystal tried to make her mom happy. Even if she was doing it for more selfish reasons than she wanted to admit. I’ll be honest, her writing a sequel to Rapunzel didn’t interest me. I understand where it was coming from and the plot line, but I felt that the story would have been the same without it. Now the dinosaur sex book on the other hand… That was a great little twist and a side pot into the story i’ll be honest, her writing a sequel to Rapunzel didn’t interest me. I understand where it was coming from and the plot line, but I felt that the story would have been the same without it. Now the dinosaur sex book on the other hand… That was a great little twist and a side part into the story.

I didn’t like the way that Lisa and Crystal kept things from their mom, but I also grew up as an only child so conspiring with a sibling is not something that I ever experienced.

Overall, I absolutely loved this book and I will definitely be rereading it in the future. This is 100% going to be on my top list of books and I’m already excited for the future me that re-reads it. I also hope that it is turned into an audiobook, because I feel that with the right narrator is, it will be absolutely hilarious.

Thank you to Crystal Hemmingway and LibraryThing for allowing me the opportunity to read and review this book!

Unfu*k Yourself: Get Out of Your Head and Into Your Life by Gary John Bishop

I remember downloading this book awhile ago onto my Audible account and then promptly forgetting about it. I love audiobooks, but it’s not always easy for me to get into them. I tend to want the narrator to read quicker than they are. And then I get discouraged by how much time is still left for the book.

Scrolling through my Audible account, I actually clicked on a different book by Gary John Bishop. Within the first couple minutes, he mentioned “as I talked about in Unfu*k Yourself” (or something along those lines), I knew I needed to stop and listen to Unfu*k Yourself. And I am definitely glad I did.

At 3.5 hours, this is a quick book to listen to. Well, it is when your normal commute is approximately 45min each way and most of your job involves driving anyways.

I absolutely loved this book. If I could give it more than 5 stars, I would. I love the no holds barred approach that Bishop takes with this book. He calls it like it is but does it in a way that does not get you offended. Instead of making excuses for why your life is the way it is, you find yourself agreeing with him and wanting to make the necessary changes. But like he says, wanting to make the changes doesn’t mean anything if you don’t actually make the changes to have a happier and better life.

If anyone needs a kick in the pants, a word of encouragement, or some extra motivation about your life, this is the book for you.

However, if you are super easily offended, especially by cursing, move along.

Audiobook is the way to go for this book. Bishop narrates it himself and he does an incredible job.

GetUpside

Still use this app all the time. I have now gotten a total of $49.69 back! You have to get gas no matter what, might as well get some of that money back!

Michelle Boyea

With the volatility of gas prices, it’s easy to dread having to fill up your gas tank. Even when gas prices are going down, you don’t want to spend the money filling up your car. As someone who easily fills up a minimum 2-3 times a week due to her commute, I’m always looking for ways to save money.

Enter the Get Upside gas app. This app helps you save money at the pump. Open the app, see where the cheapest prices are, CLAIM THE DEAL FIRST, fill up your tank, and then submit a picture of your receipt with 4 hours and you will receive money back. It’s that easy. In two months, I’m at almost $17 cash back.

I’m also part of fuel rewards (shell stations) and use them together to save as much as I can.

Get an extra $0.20 back per gallon on your first receipt…

Infinite in Between by Carolyn Mackler

High school. 4 crazy long years. Where every event seems like it is world changing. And at the time, it is to you. Relationships come and go. Friends come and go. At the end of the day, you are the most important person to yourself.

Infinite in Between did a great job at showcasing how different 5 lives can be during the same 4 year time span. How people are capable of change and how your own life can change drastically at the drop of a hat.

One person may be discovering their sexuality. One person may be discovering long kept family secrets. Everyone will be discovering their identity. One person may have a tragic loss. Health, sickness, death, relationships, birth, music, camp, and so much more occurs during those 4 important years.

While friendships come and go, some friends are there to stay. Sometimes the most unlikely person becomes one of the most important people to you. And above all else, the person you can always rely on, is yourself.

This book was a fantastic take on how 5 people’s lives could be so different and so similar at the same time. How 5 random people could end up becoming entangled in each other’s lives in ways that aren’t always known to them. I wish there were more books to see where these 5 friends end up in life. I was left with too many questions at the end and felt very unsatisfied.

My Horizontal Life by Chelsea Handler

I’m definitely hit or miss when it comes to audiobooks. I went into this book having never heard of Chelsea Handler before, I was intrigued by the title of the book.

It was hilarious!!! She was blunt, honest, and didn’t hold back. I love that she is not ashamed of her past and embraces it wholeheartedly. I definitely want to learn more about her now.

It’s still looked down upon for a woman to enjoy men, whereas it is celebrated for men to enjoy women. The fact that Chelsea shared her experiences, is a breath of fresh air. She has nothing to be ashamed of and she empowers others to not be ashamed of who they are, and to not feel embarrassed if they don’t live to “society’s expectations”

I could listen to her stories all day long.

Side note: how cute is this gargoyle from SofiasClayCorner?! Her name is Ginny 🙂
